About me:

I have been a professional musician for 17 years and have taught piano and voice for 17 years as well.  I have my Master’s Degree in Music Education from UNC Greeley and an undergraduate degree in Vocal Performance from CU Boulder.  The lessons I offer are tailored to our students--their goals, learning technique, and unique abilities.

I have lived in Moab for 2 1/2 years.  Many of my students are in leading roles in their school's musical, get to perform for community functions and take on performance opportunities like auditions and competitions throughout Utah.  I also have some students who are really passionate about learning songs like "Happy Birthday" for their families, memorizing their favorite songs, playing on any piano they run into.  I love the passion, dedication, humor and community in my Moab students.

I work hard to offer my students a well-rounded music education.  I work with them on music technique—music theory, scales, arpeggios, technical exercises, and eurhythmics—as well as the ability to play a variety of music styles including classical, jazz, popular repertoire, improvisation and composition.  My student’s personal goals such as auditions, performances, ability level and career planning determine the course of each student’s study.

I know how to teach and emphasize learning the skills needed for a contemporary musician to become employed in the modern music world.  I help my students learn to read and play music on their own.  I also help them learn the songs they are most passionate about.  I believe that classical training gives my students the freedom to play almost anything.  As Picasso said, "Learn the rules like a technician, so you can break them like an artist."

Most of my students are passionate musicians and many of them have moved on to a career or higher education in music.  Personal music taste is always encouraged, and I strive to help our students play songs they love as well.

My students know a lot of the classical repertoire in their instrument as well as a lot of the top hits from popular genres such as acoustic, rock, alternative, pop, country, jazz.

I hope you have a great week!

Chelsea
